The theme of the conference is Achieving Global Competence: Biliteracy for All! The pre-conference started March 4 and the rest of the conference will continue until March 7, 2015. Palomo is scheduled to chair the Asia Pacific Special Interest Group, and Dr. Rivera will be sharing her presentation titled Creatively Using Digital Storytelling to Scaffold Literacy in the ESL Classroom.

2014 Snapshots

The 43rd Annual National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Conference held in San Diego, California was meaningful! The theme was Sailing into the 21st Century: Multiple Languages, Multiple Paths, Lifelong Advantages. Drs. Jose Cruz and Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera had the honor of presenting their culturally-relevant papers at the conference hosted February 12-15, 2014 at the San Diego Convention Center. Professor Rosa Salas Palomo served as the Chair during the Asian Pacific Islanders Special Interest Group session. Her Co-Chair was Dr. Shu-Yuan Lin. Although the Guam Delegation was a small group, they proudly represented the island amongst the others who presented. Their presentations focused on Sailing to an Innovative Way of Reaching Out to Pacific Islanders,Creating a Safe Classroom Environment for ELLs' Learning, Student Achievement: Bi-literate Magic in Core Subjects for Lifelong Advantages,and Alii World: Palau Language Commission Has Arrived at the Digitalized World of the Internet. Other highlights of the conference included the following: NABE - CABE Pre-Institute, The Seal of Biliteracy: An award, a policy, a strategy and tool for our bilingual movement, Dual Immersion as a Turn-Around Model: Successes and Challenges, How to Align Common Core State Standards for All Learners, Educating for Global Competence: The Value of Multilingualism, To Translanguage or not to Translanguage? How to and How Not to, and so much more!

In addition, school visits to Nestor Language Academy Charter School and Riverview Elementary School were outstanding! The Nestor School focuses on a two-way immersion program, including Spanish and English, grades K-6. It also focuses on bilingualism, biliteracy, and positive cross-cultural attitudes and activities. On the other hand, Riverview Elementary School focuses on a one-way immersion program. It offers two world language programs, including Spanish and Mandarin. It infuses 21st century learning skills, including world language instruction, technology, critical thinking, and creativity!

Dr. Rivera received a "I Support the Seal of Biliteracy" sticker as part of her participation in the NABE - CABE Pre-Institute.

The 42nd Annual National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) Conference held in Orlando, Florida was meaningful! Dr. Jose Cruz, Ron Laguana, Jimmy Teria, and Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera had the honor of presenting their culturally-relevant papers at the conference hosted February 7-9, 2013 at the Coronado Springs Resort at Walt Disney World. Professor Rosa Salas Palomo served as the Chair during the Asian-Pacific Islanders Special Interest Group session with the help of Co-Chair Dr. Shu-yuan Lin. Although the Guam Delegation was a small group, they proudly represented the island amongst the others who presented. Their presentations focused on Using Differentiated Instruction to Build Schema of ELLs in Guam, The Magic of Sustained Micronesian Regional Cooperation and Collaboration on Languages and Cultures, and The Legacy of the Navajo Code Talkers in the War in the Pacific (1942-1945). Other highlights of the conference included the following: Global Perspectives on Bilingual Education: Implications for the U.S., Achieving Academic Control of Two Languages: Insights from the Past and Present in Looking Forward, Puente de Hozho Bilingual School: A Bridge to Beauty, Intergenerational Trauma, Language Revitalization and Indigenous Knowledge: How Are All Of These Related?, Bridging Indigenous "Ways of Knowing" into Classroom Science: The Loloma Project, and Best Practices Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Development Using the Rule of 3.

Dr. Rivera received a NABE lifetime pin for her lifetime membership. She also received a NABE 2011 New Orleans pin for her presentation in the 40th Annual NABE Conference held in Louisiana.

Both Drs. Jose Q. Cruz and Matilda Naputi Rivera presented at the NABE Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 19, 2011 during the Asian-Pacific Islander SIG session. In particular, Dr. Rivera focused on the use of digital storytelling to build the schema of English Language Learners on Guam, and Dr. Cruz focused on scaffolding for excellence using SAT10 scores.
